Description
The work carried out on the grounds and building of Quinta da Gruta is not a restoration, let alone a conservation project. More than a simple refurbishment, it is a reconversion in which it was necessary to remove, reposition and redefine, as a means of erasing the traces of successive interventions which, over time, had been superimposed upon one another without any coherence or connection between them.
It is on this premise that the entire design process focuses on an almost ‘archaeological’ exploration of the site – not as a means of restoring its past, but, on the contrary, in order to recognise its essence, to rediscover its relationships with these interventions and, building on them, to establish a conceptual framework capable of transforming it into ‘material’ for other spaces and other buildings.
